Education, Corruption and the Natural Resource Curse

The empirical evidence on the determinants of growth across countries has found that growth is lower when natural resources are abundant, corruption widespread and educational attainment low. An extensive literature has examined the way in which these three variables can impact growth, but has tended to address them separately. In this paper we argue that corruption and education are interrelated and that both crucially depend on a country’s endowment of natural resources. The key element is the fact that resources affect the relative returns to investing in human and in political capital, and, through these investments, output levels and growth. In this context, inequality plays a key role both as a determinant of the possible equilibria of the economy and as an outcome of the growth process.natural resources, corruption, human capital, growth, inequality

La traducció de Narcís Oller d’«Un llibre trist»

Resum: Durant el període de crisi creativa que sofreix a finals del s. XIX, Narcís Oller es dedica a la traducció. Una de les obres que tradueix és Un llibre trist, un recull factici de tres textos de Lev Tolstoi. L’estudi comparatiu de la traducció i recepció d’aquestes obres a Europa revela que Oller utilitzà dues fonts intermèdies franceses per traduir un dels textos, La mort d’Ivan Ilitx, i una sola font per als altres dos, Tres morts i La mort al camp de batalla. La comparació amb les fonts intermèdies també posa de manifest la voluntat d’Oller de fer unes traduccions ben integrades en els sistema lingu?ístic i cultural català, fins al punt de provocar la il·lusió que són textos originals. És en els diàlegs on s’evidencia d’una manera més clara el treball d’apropiació i reescriptura que fa Oller. L’oralitat que Oller imprimeix als diàlegs aproxima les seves traduccions al text original de Tolstoi, i les distancia de les traduccions franceses intermèdies, estilísticament molt més neutres.Paraules clau: traducció del rus, Narcís Oller traductor, Lev Tolstoi al català, traducció indirecta.Abstract: During creative crisis at the end of 19th century, Narcís Oller dedicated himself to translation. One of the translated works is Un llibre trist, a collection of three texts of Leo Tolstoy. The comparative study of translation and reception of these works in Europe reveals that Oller used two intermediate sources for one of the texts, La mort d’Ivan Ilitx, and one source for the other two texts, Tres morts and La mort al camp de batalla. The comparison with the two intermediate sources also demonstrates the desire of Oller to do the translations well integrated into the Catalan linguistic and cultural system, to the point of causing the illusion that the texts are originals. This is mainly in the dialogues where the work of appropriation and rewriting can be clearly perceived. Orality incorporated by Oller in his dialogues approximates his translation to the original text of Tolstoy and distances it from intermediate French translations, which are stylistically much more neutral.Key words: translation from Russian, translator Narcís Oller, Leo Tolstoy in Catalan, indirect translation

The tactical use of the free-throw in handball

El análisis de las situaciones especiales de juego en el balonmano actual, como desigualdades numéricas, uso del portero falso o situaciones finales de partido, son aspectos en que los equipos prestan cada vez una mayor atención. Dentro de este tipo de situaciones, el uso táctico del golpe franco es un elemento del juego utilizado para lograr un mayor éxito en situaciones concretas de partido. Por tanto, dicho uso debería ser explotado en mayor medida en el juego de ataque, ya que es una de las pocas ocasiones en las que los atacantes pueden construir el juego ofensivo partiendo de una situación estable. El objetivo del trabajo es realizar una revisión descriptiva del análisis del golpe franco y su uso táctico, y proponer modelos prácticos para lograr el éxito en este tipo de situaciones. El entrenamiento posibilitará su uso en situaciones puntuales durante un partido de forma que el equipo contrario tenga que adaptarse a la nueva situación planteada.The analysis of special game situations in modern handball, such as numerical inequalities, use of a false goalkeeper and late-game situations are aspects to which the teams turn increasingly more attention. In these situations, the tactical use of the free-throw is an element of the game used to achieve success in specific game situations. Therefore, such use should be further exploited in attacking play as it is one of the few occasions in which attackers can build the offensive played from a stable situation. The aim of the work is to carry out a descriptive analysis and tactical use the shoot of free-throw, and propose practical models for success in this type of situation. The training will enable their use in specific situations during a match so that the opposing team has to adapt to the new situation presented.peerReviewe

El mapa genético de la vid: revisión bibliográfica

Este trabajo que he realizado consistió en llevar a cabo una revisión bibliográfica sobre los mapas genéticos de la vid y como han ido evolucionando desde el primer mapa que se conoce hasta el último elaborado en la actualidad pasando por los tipos de técnicas utilizadas para su elaboración y la funcionalidad que estos mapas ofrecen a esta especie de estudio que es la vid. Esta revisión aportara además un mayor conocimiento de la vid para su utilización en mejora genética. También se pone de manifiesto en este trabajo los distintos tipos de marcadores genéticos que han intervenido en la creación de estos mapas genéticos.Although the vine (Vitis vinifera L.) is considered one of the most extensive and economically profitable fruit crops worldwide (OIV, statistics 2017), there is very little genetic knowledge about this plant and very little progress has been made in the breeding of its most representative characteristics and peculiarities, in relation to its adaptive capacities to the different environmental conditions of the environment, to its production parameters or even to the qualities for winemaking. The possibility of having genetic maps saturated is vital, both to know better the genes that are involved in the most relevant characteristics, as well as to be able to identify their location within the chromosomes and even more important, to increase the possibilities of carrying out breeding programmes of these characteristics, either by carrying out the traditional way of crossing and selecting descendants, or with improvement strategies based on genetic engineering or edition through (CRISPR-CAS). The first genetic maps of grapevine were elaborated from the development of molecular markers and they were completed and reconstructed with new informations, as the genetic technologies were advancing and as the needs of the genetic maps evolved. The last and more complete version of the genetic map of the vine was carried out by A. Canaguiera in collaboration with other researchers in 2017, with a very high level of coverage and a depth of 12X of the reference genome. In this work, the genetic maps of the vine are reviewed throughout history, putting in perspective the needs that they cover and the uses of genetic maps in the knowledge and breeding of the vine.Grado en Enologí

Las otras manifestaciones de la dominación. Estrategias para hacer frente a las formas tácitas de exclusión social

Este artículo reflexiona sobre las formas de dominación tácitas que todavía hoy continúan amenazando la integridad de las personas pertenecientes a diversos colectivos. Al mismo tiempo, el presente escrito pone de manifiesto las contradicciones que envuelven las defensas afirmativas de la identidad y la especificidad. En algunos casos tales defensas no han conseguido subvertir los prejuicios y estereotipos que actúan como instancias de la opresión de los grupos sociales desfavorecidos. Por lo mismo, se concluye que además de estos mecanismos de toma de conciencia y afirmación de la identidad, debemos poner en marcha estrategias transformadoras orientadas a la reforma de las estructuras sociales y económicas que dificultan la lucha contra las formas de dominación aludidas.This paper reflects on the tacit forms of domination that continue threatening the integrity of people who belong to some collectives. At the same time, it shows the contradictions that the affirmative identity’s defenses involve. In some cases, these claims have not reached the objective of removing the prejudices and stereotypes that act as oppression instruments of disadvantaged social groups. It is concluded that apart from the affirmative mechanisms to defend the identity and the specificity, we have to undertake transformation strategies, aimed to the reform of social and economic structures that hinder the struggle against the aforementioned domination forms
